Education in NZ: Frequently Asked Questions

Finding the right fit for your child can be a big task. Here are the top questions parents ask about the New Zealand education system.

When does my child have to start school?

In New Zealand, most children start primary school on their 5th birthday (called "New Entrants"). However, education only becomes officially compulsory from the age of 6.

What are the different types of schools in New Zealand?

There are three main types: State schools (government-funded), State-integrated schools (former private schools that now receive state funding but keep their "special character", like religious schools), and Private schools.

Is schooling free for New Zealand residents?

State schools are free for NZ citizens and permanent residents. While tuition is free, schools often ask for a "voluntary donation" to help with extra-curricular activities, and parents are responsible for costs like uniforms, stationery, and field trips.

How do school zones work?

Many state schools have an "enrolment scheme" or home zone. If you live within that zone, your child is guaranteed a place. If you're out-of-zone, you may need to apply through a ballot system if the school has space available.

What exactly is NCEA?

NCEA stands for the National Certificate of Educational Achievement. It is the main qualification for secondary students. Levels 1, 2, and 3 are usually completed in Years 11, 12, and 13 respectively, and are recognized for university entrance both in NZ and abroad.

When are the school holidays?

The NZ school year has four terms. Each of the first three terms ends with a two-week break. Term 4 ends in mid-December for a long summer holiday that goes through January, coinciding with the Christmas and New Year period.

What is the 20 hours ECE subsidy?

The government provides a subsidy called "20 Hours ECE" which helps cover the cost of early childhood education for children aged 3, 4, and 5. It covers up to 6 hours a day, totaling 20 hours per week at participating centres.

What is the Equity Index?

The Equity Index (EQI) replaced the old decile system in 2023. It's a formula used by the government to allocate extra funding to schools based on the socio-economic challenges faced by their student populations, ensuring fair resource distribution.

Will my child learn te reo Māori?

Yes, te reo Māori and tikanga Māori (culture and customs) are increasingly integrated into the NZ curriculum. Many schools use Māori greetings and concepts daily, and it's available as an elective subject in most secondary schools.

What is an Intermediate school?

Intermediate schools cater to students in Years 7 and 8 (ages 11 to 12). They act as a important bridge between primary and secondary school, offering a wider range of specialized subjects (like technology and art) to prepare kids for high school.
