How NCEA Credits Work
The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) is New Zealand's main national qualification for senior secondary students (Years 11–13). NCEA operates on a credit-based system where every standard you complete awards you a set number of credits.
Credits are earned through assessment standards, which can be either Achievement Standards or Unit Standards. Each standard is worth a specific number of credits (usually 2–6), and you accumulate these credits across all your subjects throughout the school year.
Students can earn credits at different grade levels: Achieved, Merit, or Excellence. All three grades count equally toward your total credit count, but Merit and Excellence credits contribute more to your Rank Score, which is used by universities when selecting students for competitive courses.
What You Need to Pass NCEA
To be awarded an NCEA certificate at any level, you must meet three core requirements:
- 80 total credits at that level or above
- 10 Literacy credits — demonstrating reading and writing skills
- 10 Numeracy credits — demonstrating mathematical reasoning
These 80 credits can be accumulated across multiple years — you are not required to complete them all in one year. Credits earned above the target level (e.g. Level 3 credits counting toward Level 2) also apply. NZQA now also requires students to meet a Literacy and Numeracy co-requisite, which is typically demonstrated through specific standards.
University Entrance Explained
University Entrance (UE) is the minimum requirement to enrol at a New Zealand university. It is awarded by NZQA and has four specific requirements that must all be met:
- NCEA Level 3 (80 credits at Level 3 or higher)
- 14 credits in each of three approved subjects at Level 3
- 10 Literacy credits at Level 2 or above (reading and writing)
- 10 Numeracy credits at Level 1 or above
Many university courses have additional entry requirements beyond UE, particularly competitive programmes such as Medicine, Law, or Engineering. Always check individual faculty requirements directly with each institution.
Internal vs External Assessments
NCEA assessments are divided into two main types. Internal assessments are completed during the school year under the supervision of your teacher — they include essays, projects, experiments, oral presentations, and portfolios. These are marked by your teacher and moderated by NZQA.
External assessments are typically sat at the end of the year during the NCEA examination period in November. They are marked centrally by NZQA examiners and include written exams and performance tasks.
Most schools aim for a balance of both types. Relying too heavily on internal assessments may leave students less prepared for the pressures of university examinations, while relying only on externals may not reflect a student's full academic capability.
